Online marine surveyor courses let you build professional knowledge while continuing your maritime work. NAMVS Academy offers foundational education covering the surveyor’s role, vessel construction and systems, ethics, documentation, report writing, standards and client communication.

Use this guide to choose a starting point, review the academy’s current offerings and understand how coursework connects with professional certification.

Start with Introduction to Marine Surveying

The introductory course is described as 100% online and self-paced, with no formal prerequisite. The academy catalog labels the same linked course Marine Surveying Fundamentals.

Its published curriculum introduces the inspection workflow and the differences among pre-purchase, insurance, Condition & Value, appraisal, damage and commercial survey work. It also addresses independence, stakeholder relationships, scope, limitations, documentation and career pathways. The course provides a foundation for further learning rather than complete preparation to perform every vessel survey.

Explore the current foundational courses

The published APS bundle contains the following nine courses. Follow each link to review its current description and enrollment options:

Choose individual courses or review the bundle

If you are filling a specific knowledge gap, begin by comparing individual course descriptions. If you are planning a broader foundation, review the nine-course APS bundle and ask NAMVS how it fits your experience and target credential.

The academy catalog currently lists eight of the individual foundational courses at $399 each. Verify the price and access terms on the current listing before enrollment. Confirm bundle pricing and any additional certification expenses directly with NAMVS; a course price is not an all-inclusive professional credential fee.

Turn online study into useful professional skills

For each lesson, write down the learning objective, a vessel example and the evidence you would need during an inspection. When you study documentation, practice describing a component’s location and observed condition. When you study report writing, make your scope, findings and recommendations easy for a client to distinguish.

Pair coursework with practical vessel experience and feedback on your work. Online education develops your foundation; applying it responsibly requires competence with the vessel and assignment you accept.

Understand the certification pathway

NAMVS publishes Apprentice (APS), Associate (ASMS), Certified (CMS), Senior (SMS) and Fellow (FMS) levels. The requirements extend beyond course completion and include experience, supporting credentials, examinations and, for higher levels, report submissions. Review the current requirements with NAMVS before choosing your course sequence.

Frequently asked questions

Can I begin without prior coursework? The introductory course lists no formal prerequisite. That does not remove the experience and credential requirements for professional certification.

Are all courses the same length? Check each course listing. The introductory page publishes a 2–3 hour study estimate, while other parts of that page describe a longer completion schedule. Plan according to the actual lessons and your learning needs, and confirm current expectations with the academy.

Does enrollment guarantee certification? No. You must meet the requirements for the NAMVS level you pursue, including the applicable assessment and experience requirements.
