Choosing a marine surveyor school is a decision about the skills you need to develop, the experience you bring and the work you want to perform. NAMVS provides online marine surveying education through NAMVS Academy, alongside a progressive professional certification pathway.
What to look for in a marine surveyor school
Begin with the curriculum. A useful foundation explains the purpose of an inspection, the differences between survey assignments, how to document findings and how to communicate professional conclusions. Look for clear learning objectives and assessments, then ask how practical experience and report quality are evaluated beyond coursework.
Compare delivery format, prerequisite knowledge, total costs and credential requirements. Ask what a completion certificate represents and what additional steps are required for professional certification. Your choice should fit the vessel types and assignments you intend to pursue.
Learn the foundations with NAMVS Academy
The academy’s introductory course covers the surveyor’s role, inspection workflow, pre-purchase surveys, insurance and Condition & Value surveys, marine appraisal concepts, damage surveys, commercial vessel categories, stakeholder relationships, ethics, scope and limitations, and career pathways.
The Introduction to Marine Surveying course page describes online, self-paced study with no formal prerequisite. It establishes the framework for later technical learning; it is not a complete vessel-survey qualification on its own.
Build a broader foundation
The academy’s published nine-course APS bundle includes Marine Surveying Fundamentals, Vessel Construction Basics, Marine System Awareness, Professional Ethics, Survey Documentation, Report Writing Fundamentals, ABYC Standards, Professional Conduct and Client Communication.
These subjects connect technical knowledge with the professional habits clients need: an organized inspection, objective findings, usable records and a clear report. Review the current APS course bundle for the included courses and enrollment information.
Education and certification work together
NAMVS publishes five levels: Apprentice Marine Surveyor (APS), Associate Marine Surveyor (ASMS), Certified Marine Surveyor (CMS), Senior Marine Surveyor (SMS) and Fellow Marine Surveyor (FMS). Requirements build progressively through experience, supporting credentials, education, examinations and, at higher levels, report submissions. Fellowship is by invitation.
Completing a course or purchasing a bundle does not automatically satisfy every professional credential requirement. Check your experience and existing credentials against the published NAMVS certification levels, and ask NAMVS which requirements apply to your intended pathway.
Plan your study and budget
Online study can help you work education into an existing maritime career. Reserve time for lessons, notes, assessments and review, and pair study with practical vessel experience. An introductory course’s study estimate should not be interpreted as the time needed to become a competent independent surveyor.
The academy lists several individual courses at $399 each. Check the live catalog and confirm your full pathway cost with NAMVS, including any separate examination, standards-training or credential requirements. Bundle pricing should be confirmed on the current enrollment page.
