Marine Surveyor Certification

NAMVS marine surveying education collage showing vessel inspections, documentation and technical training

Marine surveyor certification requires more than finishing an online course. NAMVS combines maritime experience, supporting credentials, education, examinations and professional report review in a progressive pathway. Begin by choosing the level that fits your background, then confirm the remaining requirements before enrolling.

Prepare an eligibility record

List your vessel operations, maintenance, engineering and inspection work with dates and responsibilities. Gather current maritime credentials, endorsements and training certificates. Ask how prior experience and equivalent examinations are evaluated. A clear record helps NAMVS identify the gaps in your intended pathway.

Apprentice and Associate levels

The published Apprentice Surveyor (APS) requirements include at least one year of maritime experience, minimum age 18, MMC/TWIC requirements, an OS or Wiper endorsement, introductory surveying and ethics education, an ABYC standards course, a background check, a professional conduct agreement and an examination.

Associate Surveyor (ASMS) builds on APS and lists two years of experience, an AB or QMED endorsement or equivalent examination, two ABYC courses, survey fundamentals, report writing, photo documentation, regulations education, five prior survey examples and an examination.

Certified, Senior and Fellow levels

Certified Surveyor (CMS) builds on ASMS and lists three years of experience, an OUPV, Mate or Engineer license, ABYC Master Advisor certification, advanced surveying, appraisal, damage, insurance and business coursework, ten reports and an examination.

Senior Surveyor (SMS) lists five years of experience, a Master or Engineer license, advanced technical and professional subjects, twenty reports and an examination. Fellow Surveyor (FMS) lists seven years, specialist and leadership development, thirty reports and an examination; Fellowship is by invitation. Confirm the complete published requirements with NAMVS before applying.

Match courses to your gaps

The nine-course APS bundle groups foundational subjects. Buying the bundle does not waive experience, supporting credentials, conduct requirements or examinations. Ask which courses meet your intended pathway and whether separate standards training is required.

Build evidence of professional competence

Organize your reports by assignment, date and vessel type. Make scope, inspection limitations, findings and recommendations easy to distinguish. Request permission before sharing client material and obtain NAMVS instructions for redaction and report submission. A technically sound report should connect each conclusion to the evidence available.

Questions before you apply

Which level matches your experience? Which credentials remain outstanding? What examinations and fees apply? How are prior courses reviewed? What continuing education follows certification? Written answers support a realistic study plan and budget.

Read the career roadmap, compare online courses and contact info@namvs.com with your background and target level.
